What to Bring

Reef-Safe Sunscreen
The beaches face west. Afternoon sun on the water is intense, and the sand reflects it back at you.
A Light Layer
Evenings cool off fast, even in August. A fleece or light jacket earns its place in the bag.
Water Shoes
The lake entry at most beaches is rocky. Water shoes make the difference between a great swim and a sore one.
A Real Camera
Sunsets over Lake Michigan are the kind that make your phone feel inadequate. Bring something better if you have it.
A Day Pack
For the dunes, the trails, and the farmers market haul. Something with a water bottle pocket.
Extra Water
The Dune Climb at Sleeping Bear is short but steep. Bring more water than you think you need.
A Paper Map
Cell service drops in the Leelanau Peninsula and along M-22. Download offline maps or grab a paper one in town.
A Cooler
The wineries along the Old Mission Peninsula sell bottles to go. A small cooler keeps them in good shape on the drive back.
Bug Spray
Wooded trails and lakeside evenings bring mosquitoes. Pack it and you won't think about it again.
